It happened on a Samhain night
A silver moon rose to her height
As I stayed up alone to write
Of love made clear, and love’s delight

As I was working on a song
I heard a voice both clear and strong
Reminding me of how I long
For love’s delight; a true heartsong

So I looked up and in the place
Where the mirror had shown my face
A fairy woman sang with grace
A true heartsong now taking place

She sang most beautiful and true
And I knew nothing I could do
Could stop this if I’d wanted to
From taking place, so follow through

I took my harp from where she lay
For muse’s guidance I did pray
That she may show me the right way
To follow through, and grace repay

To court the lady now I played
And from her song I never strayed
All of my love and skill displayed
Her grace repaid; a heartsong made

The warm brass strings of my harp rang
To complement the song she sang
Love piercing me like hunger’s pang
This heartsong made, and so we sang

Soon then she turned as if to go
I knew I had to stop her so
I tried using all that I know
And so I sang that she’d not go

My own voice rose as if in prayer
Ringing throughout this strange night’s air
And it did hold the lady fair
She did not go, it held her there

I sang to her of dreams and love
Of worlds below and worlds above
All worlds and things worth singing of
It held her there, my fairy love

And then her milk-white hand reached through
The mirror’s surface and I knew
Just what she wanted me to do
My fairy love, how my heart flew


Quickly I now had to decide
Whether her calling to abide
And join her on the other side
How my heart flew, how my heart cried

I longed to hold her but held back
For I knew those who took that track
Were never able to come back
How my heart cried, but still held back

To think that once I would have leapt
At chances like this, to be kept
In that strange world, where once I’d crept
But now held back, I can’t accept

But I thought of a better way
My plan was to coax her to stay
Even if only for one day
I can’t accept the other way

My song rose up more earnest then
But she had turned away again
I thought I must have lost her when
The other way she turned again

And then we sang in harmony
While I played more ecstatically
And richly she rewarded me
She turned again and stepped toward me

The mirror rippled round her hair
As she came through with little care
I longed to move; I didn’t dare
She stepped towards me through misty air

What happened next I’ll not tell here
For this tale is too long I fear
But I still hold her very dear
Through misty air was love made clear
